Sam racing at the front

A brace of trophies to kick off the season

Sam Randon Racing at RockinghamAfter a winter of testing and preparing himself for a serious attempt on the championship, Sam came out of the traps fighting at the first round of the Michelin Clio Cup Series this weekend.

20 year old Sam drew on all his past karting experience in a wet qualifying session to put himself right at the front of the grid for his maiden pole position as a clear demonstration of his seasons intent.

“I’m very comfortable driving in the wet conditions” said a jubilant Sam.

Despite Randon’s wet weather advantage, the three subsequent races over the weekend were held on slick tyres in the dry.

Race 1 didn’t go according to plan as pole man Sam hit a patch of spilt fuel on lap 1 and disappeared into the scenery.

But normal service was resumed in race 2 with another impressive start this time from second spot on the grid.  Sam was leading by the first corner and in a thrilling race he was unable to maintain the lead against a charging teammate Luke Herbert.

With Herbert’s tyres past their best, Randon closed the gap later in the race and after a couple of attempts to retake the lead, successfully defended, eventually settled for second to give his new team, Westbourne Motorsport, a much deserved 1-2.

“I was so disappointed with race 1 when I spun off due to fluid spilt on the track by a previous race, so to convert the front row start in race 2 into a podium was a huge relief.” Said Sam

With growing confidence going into race 3, Randon was starting from P5 with much to do to replicate his previous success, but another blistering start saw him immediately catapult up to third place to continue the fight chasing his teammate again in the leading trio.

It was a great race but my tyres went off badly towards the end. I was driving on the limit and defending for all my life. I’m thrilled I held onto third spot,

I wasn’t going to let that podium go.

“I have to thank all my sponsors for making this possible.”

Sam leaves Rockingham 3rd in the championship after his 2 podiums.
